COMMUNITY SOUP KITCHEN
Adas Yoshuron sponsors the Community Soup Kitchen at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Rockland on the first Sunday of each month. Members plan the meal, purchase the food, prepare it and clean up after. Soup Kitchen is a family affair. Our children participate, and it is a tradition that the Hebrew School children host one of the lunches themselves. Scroll down to see announcements of the yearly Easter and Christmas Community Dinners we have sponsored. These holiday dinners are especially rewarding for our volunteers, who enjoy setting beautiful tables with fresh flowers and serving a sumptuous feast while other Soup Kitchen organizers celebrate at home with their families. We generally serve 30 to 40 people. Setup begins at 12:15 p.m. and we serve the meal at 1:00 p.m. Clean-up is complete by 2:15 p.m. To volunteer or to offer to contribute items to the Soup Kitchen, contact Soup Kitchen Coordinator Linda Garson Smith by contacting the synagogue office (207-594-4523) or emailing soupkitchen@adasyoshuron.org. New participants are always welcome.
AREA INTERFAITH OUTREACH FOOD PANTRY (AIO)
AIO Food Pantry in Rockland has been serving the residents of Knox County for more than 20 years, providing food from their collective food pantry, emergency financial assistance, and referrals to social service agencies. An average of 315 families (650 to 700 individuals) are served each month. Adas Yoshuron collects canned and boxed foods in the community room and announces special collections, usually during the High Holy Days. For more information or to contribute, call the synagogue office at 207-594-4523 or email info@adasyoshuron.org.
BOOKS & BAGELS
Books & Bagels is open to the community. The group meets monthly in the community room, usually on the second Sunday of the month at 10 a.m. (why not come a few minutes early to settle in to noshing?), and the discussion ends about noon. The group selects the books, usually in June and again in the fall. The parameters are that each book must be about a Jewish subject or by a Jewish author, and the titles include both fiction and nonfiction. Every discussion is facilitated by a member of the group. For more information, please call the synagogue office at 207-594-4523 or email info@adasyoshuron.org.
